Suicide- A serious sin Mufti Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi Qadri’s lecture in Masjid Abul Hasanaat
This world is a place of test and trial. The Lord, Allah SWT, who created human beings, who protects them from the mother’s womb to the last moment of life, and who grants human beings the bounty of peace, the same Lord, Allah SWT tests us through difficulties and hardships. At every step in life, we have to face new difficulties and hardships. Only that person is considered a winner here who faces all kinds of difficulties with courage. The person who loses patience and hastily ends up taking his/her own life does not have peace even after death.
Mufti Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi Qadri expressed these thoughts in the weekly lecture at Masjid Abul Hasanaat, Phool Bagh, Jahanuma. This lecture was organized by Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center. This is a very sad turn of things for us that our students end up taking their lives only on failing examinations, when suicide is a Major Sin (Gunaah Kabira).
Allah SWT says: and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction. Surah Baqarah-(2:195).
If any (one) does that in rancour and injustice,― soon shall We cast him into the Fire: and easy it is for Allah. (30). An Nisa-(4:30)
If we face any difficulty, then by ending our life we will not be able to run away from that difficulty. The Holy Prophet Mohammed (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: Those who commit suicide will be punished in the same way as they killed themselves. There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah SWT be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet Mohammed (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: The person who committed suicide by throwing himself/herself from the top of a mountain, in the fire of Hell, that person will keep throwing himself/herself. The person who committed suicide by drinking poison, that poison will be in that person’s hand and in the fire of Hell, that person will be drinking it forever. The person who commits suicide using any metal weapon will keep tearing his/her stomach with it in the fire of Hell.
There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Holy Prophet Mohammed (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: …….Never Ever Desire Death. The maximum that one can say is that O Allah SWT! Keep me alive until life is better for me and if death is better for me than grant me death.
Those minor problems to run way from which people commit suicide, much bigger problems await them after death. We should not commit suicide because of failing in exams or because of some problem in life. Instead, we should have the conviction (strong belief) that life is a great bounty of Allah SWT. Today’s difficulty will be removed tomorrow. Today we did not succeed, tomorrow we will.
According to the example set by the Holy Prophet Mohammed (صلى الله عليه و سلم), we should acquire Tawakkal alal Allah (Trust in Allah SWT). We should be happy with what Allah SWT has decided for us. Human beings should not be sad on any difficulty, but should accept everything that is from Allah SWT wholeheartedly. We should be happy with whatever Allah SWT has given us. Human beings should keep on making efforts to get what is better than what is given, but human beings should be happy accepting it as the best possible ni’mah (bounty) of Allah SWT. Also human beings should not be sad because they did not get something, but we should have faith in Allah’s SWT Mercy and keep trying and one day insha Allah success and victory will be ours.
